Health Essentials - How to Bend and Lift
Hey there, Dr. Fedich. I have a quick video for you on how to bend and lift properly. So a lot of people with their back hurt bending and lifting improperly. I’ll show you a couple quick tricks. So number one, we always want to bend with our knees. So if we're picking up something in front of us, say we got this to pick up, a lot of people would just bend down like this, pick it up, and that's how we hurt our back. The back is very weak like that. So if we got this in front of us, what we want to do is bend with our legs. Right? So we can just bend and squat a little bit. Something lower like this, it's a little bit off screen. We're going to take one foot from the other, bend down, pick this up, and we're going to keep it right close to our stomach, and then we're going to stand up. So I’ll get a little closer. We're just going to bend one foot in front of the other, bend and pick that up. You want to keep the weight nice and close to your belly. That's really important. Your back's very strong, you hold a lot of weight here. 10 pounds weight to your back right here is about 10 pounds. As you lift it out, we're 15 times that. So that 10 pound weight is now 150 pounds. That's how we hurt our back. So you want to keep it really close to the belly. So, yeah, we're going to bend, pick that up, keep the back nice and straight. Another thing we do have to bend down, pick something on the floor, say drop this little towel on the floor. I'll lower the camera a little bit for you. Say bend down. We drop this on the floor. We got to pick that up. So there's a hard way, you know, to bend like this. We're certainly going to hurt our back doing something like that. What we want to do is use our one hand, going to use it as a support down the leg, slide that down, slide that back up, give some support. So real simple stuff to do to help you out a little bit, bend and pick things over. Remember, keep the weight close to our stomach as much as possible. Lift and bend with the legs, one leg down, one leg back. And we do have to do that slide that elbow down the side of the leg like I showed you. So real simple tips on lifting, carrying things, help to avoid some injuries.
